What Actually Happens Inside Your Skin During a Sunburn

A sunburn isn't just surface redness; it's your skin detecting damaged DNA and ordering ruined cells to self-destruct before they turn cancerous.

By the numbers

Sunburn is direct UV damage to DNA: within an hour, mast cells release histamine and TNF that drive the inflammation and redness you feel, while keratinocytes with irreparable DNA damage become 'sunburn cells' that undergo p53-mediated apoptosis to eliminate cells at risk of becoming cancerous.

Clinical references describe sunburn as the visible end of a protective process: the p53 pathway acts as a genomic safety switch, sacrificing badly damaged keratinocytes through programmed cell death rather than letting them survive and potentially turn malignant.

Questions we get a lot

Why does sunburned skin turn red and feel hot?

UV damage triggers mast cells in the skin to release inflammatory mediators such as histamine and TNF within about an hour of exposure. These widen blood vessels and recruit immune activity, producing the warmth, swelling, and redness of a burn. The redness is the inflammatory response, not the UV light itself.

What are 'sunburn cells'?

Sunburn cells are keratinocytes whose DNA has been damaged beyond repair by UV radiation. Rather than survive in a damaged state, they are driven into apoptosis, a tightly controlled self-destruction, largely through the p53 pathway. This removes cells that might otherwise become cancerous.

Does peeling mean the damage is healing?

Peeling is the skin shedding the damaged, dying outer cells while it builds a fresh layer underneath. It's part of recovery, but it also signals that real DNA damage occurred. Peeling skin offers little protection, so keep the area covered and out of further sun while it heals.

What people keep asking

r/AskDocs: 'Why does my sunburn get hot and tight, then peel a few days later? Is the peeling skin actually dead?'
