Application & Usage Myths

Your SPF 50 Is Probably Acting Like SPF 15. Here's Why.

The number on the bottle assumes a thick lab-grade layer almost nobody applies, and the fix takes about ten seconds.

By the numbers

Studies cited by the Skin Cancer Foundation show the average person applies only one-quarter to one-half of the amount of sunscreen used in standardized lab SPF testing, which means real-world protection can fall to roughly a third of the labeled number.

The American Academy of Dermatology lists using too little product as one of the most common sunscreen mistakes, advising about one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass, to cover the exposed body, while the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying generously and reapplying every two hours.

Questions we get a lot

How much sunscreen am I actually supposed to use?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends about one ounce, roughly the amount that would fill a shot glass, to cover all exposed skin on the body. For the face and neck alone, a nickel-sized dollop is a common guideline. Most people fall short of this, which is exactly why their real protection lags the label.

Why does my SPF 50 only protect like a much lower number in real life?

SPF ratings are measured in a lab using 2 mg of product per square centimeter of skin, a thicker layer than most people apply. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes the average person uses only a quarter to half that amount, so the protection you actually get can drop to around a third of the labeled SPF. Applying more, or layering two coats, narrows that gap.

Does reapplying matter as much as how much I use?

Both matter. The American Academy of Dermatology advises reapplying every two hours, and more often after swimming or sweating, because sunscreen wears off with time and friction. Even a generous first application degrades over a day outdoors. Pairing an adequate amount with regular reapplication is what keeps protection close to the label.
