Why does melasma need more than UVB protection?
Melasma is triggered largely by UVA and high-energy visible (blue) light, which keep pigment-producing cells active. SPF mainly reflects UVB protection, so a high-SPF sunscreen alone isn't enough. Choose broad-spectrum, strong UVA coverage and, ideally, visible-light protection from a tint.
Are tinted sunscreens better for melasma?
Often, yes. Tinted sunscreens contain iron oxides that block much of the visible light implicated in melasma — protection clear sunscreens generally don't provide. For pigmentation-prone skin, a broad-spectrum tinted mineral or hybrid sunscreen used daily is usually the best choice.
Is sunscreen enough to treat melasma on its own?
No. Daily broad-spectrum, visible-light-protective sunscreen is the foundation, but melasma usually also needs treatments such as topical pigment-lighteners prescribed by a dermatologist. Without strict sun protection, however, those treatments tend to fail and pigment rebounds, so the two work together.
