Why the New Filter Is a Big Deal for Darker Skin Tones

Less white cast, more elegant protection.

By the numbers

On June 9, 2026 the FDA approved bemotrizinol (Parsol Shield) at up to 6% — the first new sunscreen active in the US monograph since the 1990s — an organic, fully transparent filter that leaves no white cast.

Because bemotrizinol is an organic, colorless filter, it can deliver broad-spectrum protection without the white cast that mineral sunscreens leave on deeper skin tones.

Questions we get a lot

Why is the newly approved filter a big deal for darker skin tones?

Bemotrizinol is an organic (carbon-based) filter that is completely transparent on skin, so unlike mineral zinc oxide and titanium dioxide it leaves no white or ashy cast. That makes elegant, no-cast broad-spectrum protection far easier to achieve on deeper skin tones, where mineral formulas have historically been hardest to wear.

Why do mineral sunscreens leave a white cast on darker skin?

Mineral filters work partly by scattering light, and the same particles that block UV also scatter visible light, leaving a whitish film that shows up most on deeper skin tones. Transparent organic filters such as bemotrizinol avoid this, which is why their FDA approval matters for inclusivity.

Which sunscreen filters are approved in the US vs the EU?

The EU has approved 34 UV filters for sunscreens; the US allows about 16 (now 17 with bemotrizinol's 2026 approval). Filters widely used in Europe and Asia — such as bisoctrizole and drometrizole trisiloxane — remain under FDA review, which is why elegant, no-cast US options have lagged.
