What it is
2-O-Ethyl ascorbic acid is a vitamin C derivative in which an ethyl group is attached to the ascorbic acid molecule, improving its stability against oxidation compared with pure L-ascorbic acid. It is water soluble and is converted to ascorbic acid in the skin, where it can act as an antioxidant. In sunscreens it is commonly paired with UV filters to provide supplementary antioxidant support.
Safety & warnings
Ethyl ascorbic acid is generally well tolerated and is considered less irritating and more stable than pure ascorbic acid. As with other vitamin C forms, high concentrations may cause mild transient tingling or irritation in sensitive skin.
Origin & sourcing
Synthetic; produced by chemically modifying ascorbic acid (vitamin C) with an ethyl group.
Questions everyone asks
How is this different from regular vitamin C?
It is a more stable, water-soluble derivative of ascorbic acid that resists oxidation better and converts to vitamin C in the skin.
Why is it used in sunscreens?
It serves as an antioxidant that can complement UV filters as part of the product's overall formulation.
