What it is
4-Terpineol is a monoterpene alcohol and one of several terpineol isomers found in many essential oils. In cosmetics it functions mainly as a fragrance and masking ingredient, contributing a fresh, slightly woody or earthy aroma. It is the principal constituent responsible for much of the characteristic odor of tea tree oil.
Safety & warnings
As a fragrance terpene, 4-terpineol can oxidize on air exposure, and terpenoid materials in general carry some potential for skin sensitization in susceptible individuals. People with known sensitivity to essential oils, particularly tea tree oil, may prefer to patch test products containing it.
