What it is
Aminomethyl Propanediol is an organic amino-alcohol added to cosmetics to control and adjust pH. It is commonly used to neutralize acidic gelling and thickening agents such as carbomers, allowing them to swell and build the viscosity and stable texture seen in gels and creams. Because it works at very low levels purely as a pH and buffering aid, it has no direct conditioning or active function on the skin.

At the low use levels typical for pH adjustment, Aminomethyl Propanediol is generally well tolerated in finished products that are formulated to a skin-appropriate pH. As an alkaline amino-alcohol, the raw material is basic and is used in small balancing amounts rather than as a leave-on active. It is not considered comedogenic.
