What it is
Aminopropyl ascorbyl phosphate is a derivative of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in which the reactive hydroxyl groups are protected as a phosphate and paired with an aminopropyl moiety. The phosphate ester makes the molecule far more stable to air and light than free vitamin C, while still allowing it to function as an antioxidant once in the skin. It is used as a conditioning antioxidant ingredient associated with supporting a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
Safety & warnings
Stabilized ascorbyl phosphate derivatives are generally well tolerated and tend to be milder than free ascorbic acid. It is not a recognized fragrance allergen. As with any active, very sensitive skin may prefer to introduce it gradually.
Origin & sourcing
Synthetic, a chemically modified form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid).
Questions everyone asks
Why use a vitamin C derivative instead of pure vitamin C?
The phosphate and aminopropyl groups make this form much more stable to air and light than free ascorbic acid, while it can still act as an antioxidant in the skin.
Is it harsh on skin?
Stabilized ascorbyl phosphate derivatives are generally milder and better tolerated than pure ascorbic acid.
