What it is
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid with a distinctive deep red-orange color, produced by certain microalgae and found in marine organisms such as krill and salmon. In skincare it is used chiefly for its antioxidant activity and, because of its strong color, can also tint a formula. In sunscreens it appears as an antioxidant or supporting ingredient and does not act as a UV filter.
