What it is
Bamboo vinegar is the acidic, water-soluble liquid collected when bamboo is subjected to high-temperature pyrolysis and the resulting smoke is condensed and refined. It contains organic acids such as acetic acid along with phenolic compounds, giving it astringent and conditioning characteristics. In cosmetics it is used in small amounts as a skin-conditioning component.
Safety & warnings
Used at low concentrations in cosmetics. Because pyrolysis liquids can contain phenolic and acidic constituents, well-refined grades are preferred and sensitive skin may benefit from a patch test.
