What it is
Behenyl alcohol is a long-chain saturated fatty alcohol with 22 carbon atoms, formula C22H46O, also called 1-docosanol. Unlike volatile drying alcohols such as ethanol, fatty alcohols are waxy, conditioning ingredients used for texture and feel. In formulas it works as an emollient that softens skin, as a viscosity controller that thickens products, and as an emulsion stabilizer that helps oil and water phases stay properly mixed. It appears in moisturizers, creams, cleansers, and sunscreens.
