Beta-carotene

An orange-red plant pigment and provitamin A used in cosmetics as a colorant and antioxidant skin-conditioning ingredient.

What it is

Beta-carotene is a carotenoid pigment found in many plants, giving carrots and other produce their orange color, and it is a precursor the body can convert to vitamin A. In cosmetics it serves as an antioxidant that helps protect formulas and condition the skin, and it can lend a natural orange-yellow tint to a product. It is used at low levels in skincare and sunscreens.

Safety & warnings

Beta-carotene is well tolerated topically and is not a known sensitizer or comedogen. Because it is a strong pigment, high levels can impart a yellow-orange color to a product or temporarily to the skin.

Origin & sourcing

Naturally found in carrots, algae, and other plants; also produced synthetically and by fermentation.

Questions everyone asks

What does beta-carotene do in a sunscreen?

It works as an antioxidant and skin-conditioning agent and can also contribute a natural orange-yellow color to the formula.

Will beta-carotene stain my skin?

At the low levels used in cosmetics it generally does not, though it is a strong pigment, so very high concentrations could leave a temporary tint.
