Butyrospermum Parkii Oil

Butyrospermum Parkii Oil is the liquid oil fraction of shea, used in cosmetics and sunscreens as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent.

What it is

Shea oil is the softer, more fluid portion derived from the nut of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa, formerly Butyrospermum parkii), distinct from the firmer shea butter. It is rich in fatty acids and provides a cushioning, emollient feel that helps soften and condition the skin. In sunscreens it contributes to the emollient base and skin feel rather than to UV protection.

Safety & warnings

Shea oil is generally well tolerated and is considered to have low comedogenicity, making it suitable for most skin types. It is derived from a tree nut; while refined shea is widely used even in sensitive-skin products, individuals with specific concerns may wish to exercise caution. It is not a recognized fragrance allergen.

Origin & sourcing

Natural; obtained from the nuts of the shea tree, which is native to the savanna regions of West and Central Africa, by fractionating shea fat into its liquid oil portion.

History

Shea has a long history of traditional use in West Africa as a skin and food fat, and shea-derived ingredients are now widely used in cosmetics worldwide.

Questions everyone asks

How is shea oil different from shea butter?

Shea oil is the liquid fraction separated from shea fat, so it is more fluid and lighter-feeling than the firmer shea butter.

Is shea oil pore-clogging?

It is generally considered low on the comedogenicity scale and is used in many products for normal to dry skin.
