C12-18 Acid Triglyceride

A semi-synthetic triglyceride formed by esterifying glycerin with a blend of C12 to C18 fatty acids, used as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent in sunscreens and other skin care.

What it is

This is a glyceride in which glycerin is esterified with a mixture of medium- and long-chain fatty acids ranging from C12 (lauric) to C18 (stearic and oleic). The result is an oily emollient that softens and smooths the skin and contributes a rich, conditioning feel to the formula. It is broadly similar in function to other plant-derived triglycerides and is used to adjust spreadability and skin feel.

Safety & warnings

Fatty acid triglycerides of this kind are generally well tolerated and are common emollients in skin care. Triglycerides containing higher proportions of lauric or longer-chain saturated fatty acids can be moderately comedogenic for acne-prone skin, so very oil-prone users may prefer lighter alternatives.
