What it is

This ingredient is a phosphate ester bearing fluorinated alcohol chains, used chiefly as a coating to treat the surfaces of mineral UV filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and of color pigments. The treatment makes the particles easier to disperse uniformly and helps them resist clumping and migration in the formula. The result is a more even pigment and filter layer in tinted and mineral sunscreens.

Safety & warnings

As a particle-coating agent used at low levels and largely confined to the product film, it is generally regarded as well tolerated in leave-on cosmetics.
