What it is
Caprylyl glycol is a multifunctional glycol, chemically octane-1,2-diol, used to do several jobs in one ingredient. It acts as a humectant and emollient that gives skin a soft, conditioned feel, and it has mild antimicrobial properties that boost the effectiveness of conventional preservatives such as phenoxyethanol. Because of this synergy it is often combined with phenoxyethanol in a popular preservative blend sold as Optiphen, which both protects the product and improves its texture. It appears across many product types, from serums and creams to sunscreens.

Caprylyl glycol is a widely used, generally well-tolerated ingredient; the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel has assessed it as safe in cosmetics at typical use levels. As with other glycols, very sensitive or compromised skin can occasionally experience mild stinging, so patch testing is reasonable for highly reactive skin. It is structurally related to caprylic acid, a fatty acid found in coconut and palm oils, and biobased grades are produced by oxidation routes starting from such plant-derived fatty acids, while much commercial material is made by petrochemical processes.
