What it is
This ingredient is derived from the fruit of the pomelo (Citrus grandis, also written Citrus maxima), the large citrus regarded as an ancestor of the grapefruit. In cosmetics it is used as a botanical conditioning component and is positioned for its naturally occurring vitamin C and polyphenol content. It is generally included at low levels as a fruit-derived accent. Note that the INCI name Citrus Grandis is sometimes also applied to grapefruit-sourced material in the trade.
Safety & warnings
Generally well tolerated at cosmetic use levels. Citrus fruit material can carry naturally occurring fragrance constituents that occasionally provoke sensitivity in fragrance-reactive individuals. A fruit extract is typically lower in phototoxic furocoumarins than cold-pressed peel oil, but patch testing is reasonable for reactive skin.
