What it is
This is the volatile oil expressed from the peel of tangerine (Citrus reticulata), dominated by limonene with smaller amounts of other terpenes and aldehydes that give it a sweet citrus aroma. It is used at low levels to scent and lightly condition formulas. In sun care it acts as an aromatic component rather than a UV filter.
Safety & warnings
As a citrus peel essential oil it is high in limonene and may contain citral, both recognized fragrance allergens that can irritate or sensitize reactive skin. Expressed citrus peel oils can also carry furocoumarins linked to phototoxicity, so this is an ingredient where photosensitive and fragrance-sensitive users should take note; it is used at restrained levels in finished products.
