Cydonia Oblonga Seed Extract is derived from the seeds of the quince fruit (Cydonia oblonga Mill., family Rosaceae). The seeds yield a mucilage rich in water-soluble polysaccharides — primarily glucuronoxylan — that forms a protective film on skin. This film helps reduce transepidermal water loss and supports the skin barrier. The extract also contains phenolic acids (chlorogenic, neochlorogenic, caffeic), flavonoids such as quercetin, tannins, and amygdalin. These constituents contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Research in murine models shows topical application can suppress TARC production in keratinocytes, reducing inflammatory markers associated with atopic skin responses. Clinical studies report improved skin moisture, elasticity, and reduced erythema with no adverse effects in human volunteers over 12-week use.

No significant safety concerns are established for cosmetic use of the processed extract. Raw quince seeds contain amygdalin (~1.5%), which can release hydrogen cyanide if seeds are crushed and consumed in quantity; however, the extraction process for cosmetic-grade material renders this hazard irrelevant at use concentrations. Quince (Cydonia oblonga) is native to the Hyrcanian forests south of the Caspian Sea in Iran and has been cultivated since Neolithic times across West Asia and the Mediterranean. Seeds are a by-product of fruit processing; they are soaked in water to release the mucilaginous polysaccharides, which are then extracted, filtered, and concentrated or dried to produce the cosmetic ingredient.
