What it is

They function as chelating (sequestering) agents by binding polyvalent metal cations such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, forming stable, water-soluble complexes. In cosmetic formulations, this chelation prevents metal ions from catalysing oxidation reactions that degrade oils and fragrances, inhibits microbial growth by depriving bacteria of essential minerals, and boosts the efficacy of preservative systems. Common salt forms include Disodium EDTA and Tetrasodium EDTA, used in shampoos, conditioners, cleansers, moisturisers, and hair dyes at concentrations typically ranging from 0.01% to 1.9%.

History
Ferdinand Münz first described EDTA in 1935 while working at IG Farben, seeking a substitute for citric acid. Industrial production expanded rapidly post-World War II. EDTA and its salts have been reviewed and affirmed as safe cosmetic ingredients by the U.S. Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel multiple times, most recently reconfirming safety in 2023. The FDA approves Disodium EDTA and Calcium Disodium EDTA as food-grade preservatives (21 CFR 172.135 and 172.120), and the EU permits EDTA salts in cosmetics under the general provisions of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
