What it is
Epigallocatechin gallate is a polyphenol catechin that is the most abundant antioxidant compound in green tea. In skincare and sunscreens it is added for its antioxidant properties, helping to counter free radicals and support an antioxidant-rich formula. It can be supplied as an isolated compound or as a marker constituent of green tea extracts and is used at low levels.
Safety & warnings
EGCG is generally well tolerated in topical cosmetic use. Like many polyphenols it can be prone to oxidation and color change, which formulators manage with packaging and stabilizers; it is water-soluble and not comedogenic.
