Fullerenes

Fullerenes are spherical carbon molecules used in cosmetics as antioxidant ingredients capable of neutralizing free radicals.

What it is

Fullerenes are a class of closed-cage carbon molecules, the most familiar being the roughly spherical C60. In cosmetics they are valued for their ability to scavenge free radicals, which is why they are described as antioxidant ingredients. They are typically supplied in solubilized or dispersed cosmetic-grade forms and used at low concentrations.

Safety & warnings

Cosmetic-grade fullerene preparations are formulated for topical use at low levels. As an engineered carbon material there has been general regulatory interest in nanomaterials, so reputable suppliers use purified, characterized grades. It is not a recognized fragrance allergen and is not an oil, so comedogenicity is not a typical concern.
