Glycine Soja Phospholipids is a complex of phospholipids — primarily phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylserine — isolated from soybean (Glycine soja) seeds. Its amphiphilic structure, with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, allows it to stabilize oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, integrate into the stratum corneum lipid bilayer, and reduce transepidermal water loss. In formulations it improves texture, spreadability, and sensory elegance. It is also used as a carrier in liposomal delivery systems to enhance penetration of active ingredients.

Origin & sourcing

Derived from soybean seeds (Glycine soja). The oil-soluble phospholipid fraction is separated during degumming of crude soybean oil: raw oil is treated with water or steam, causing the phospholipids to hydrate and separate as a gum phase. This gum is dried to yield crude lecithin rich in phospholipids. Further fractionation yields enriched phospholipid concentrates. Soybeans are primarily grown in the Americas and East Asia; the ingredient may be sourced from conventional or non-GMO certified beans.

History

Phospholipids were first isolated from egg yolk by French chemist Théodore Gobley in 1845, who named the fraction lecithin. Soybean became the dominant commercial source through the 20th century as industrial soybean oil refining expanded. The EU Food Additive designation E322 formalised lecithin as a food-grade emulsifier. In cosmetics, soy-derived phospholipids have been used since at least the 1970s and are listed in the EU CosIng database. The CIR Expert Panel reviewed phosphoglycerides (including soy lecithin) and concluded they are safe as used in cosmetics.
