What it is

Glycine Soja Polypeptide consists of chains of amino acids obtained by hydrolysis of soybean protein from Glycine soja, the wild ancestor of cultivated soybean. In cosmetics, these polypeptide fragments act as skin and hair conditioners, forming a light flexible film on the skin or hair surface that helps retain moisture and improve texture. In hair care, the peptides can penetrate the inner hair structure to strengthen and smooth it. In facial formulations, they are often combined with vitamins to support skin regeneration. The polypeptide fragments are water-soluble and function as emollients, leaving skin feeling soft and supple while providing mild film-forming benefits. They are distinct from full-length soy proteins by virtue of their smaller molecular size, which may facilitate better interaction with skin and hair surfaces.

Soy is a known food allergen; however, the CIR Expert Panel concluded that dermal exposure from cosmetics is unlikely to trigger allergic reactions because the polypeptide fragments are water-soluble and have molecular weights below those associated with eliciting type I allergic reactions. Studies showed no skin irritation or allergic skin reactions in animals or human subjects. Approximately 0.3–0.4% of the general population has soy allergy, but no direct evidence links topical cosmetics containing soy-derived polypeptides to skin sensitization.

Origin & sourcing

Derived from Glycine soja, the wild soybean plant native to eastern China, Japan, Korea, and far-eastern Russia. Soy protein is extracted from soybean seeds and then subjected to partial hydrolysis — enzymatic, acid, or alkaline — to produce a variable mixture of polypeptides and amino acids of differing chain lengths. The resulting material is refined and dried for use as a cosmetic ingredient.

History

The domesticated soybean (Glycine max) was cultivated from the wild Glycine soja in East Asia approximately 6,000–9,000 years ago. Soy-derived ingredients became widely used in cosmetics during the late 20th century. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel evaluated soy proteins and peptides, including Glycine Soja Polypeptide, and issued a safety assessment concluding these ingredients are safe in cosmetics at current practices of use and concentration. The EU Cosmetics Regulation permits the use of Glycine Soja Polypeptide in cosmetic products in accordance with its general safety provisions.
