What it is
Iron oxides are stable mineral pigments that come in three core shades: red iron oxide (Fe2O3, CI 77491), yellow iron oxide (FeOOH, CI 77492), and black iron oxide (Fe3O4, CI 77499). Blended together, these three can produce a wide range of natural-looking skin tones, which is why they are central to foundations, powders, and tinted sunscreens. Beyond color, they absorb and reflect portions of visible light, and dermatology research has found that tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides help shield against visible light, especially the high-energy blue light implicated in worsening melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which mineral and chemical UV filters alone do not block well.
