What it is
This is a fatty-acid ester of isopropyl alcohol and isostearic acid, used as a lightweight emollient and skin-conditioning agent. In sunscreens it helps spread the product evenly, dissolve oil-soluble ingredients, and leave a soft, smooth finish without heaviness. It is not a UV filter and does not contribute to sun protection.
