What it is

Laureth-1 Phosphate is formed by reacting lauryl alcohol that has been ethoxylated with one unit of ethylene oxide with phosphoric acid to create a phosphate ester. In formulas it functions as an anionic emulsifier and surfactant, helping oil and water phases combine into a stable emulsion. It is commonly used in lotions, creams, and sunscreens where it contributes to texture and stability.

Safety & warnings

Phosphate-ester emulsifiers of this type are generally well tolerated at use levels in finished products. Like other surfactants they can be mildly irritating in high concentration, but in formulated leave-on products they are buffered and used at low levels.

Synthetic, manufactured by ethoxylation of lauryl (dodecyl) alcohol followed by phosphation; the lauryl alcohol portion can be sourced from plant oils or petrochemicals.
