What it is
This ingredient is a modified silicone (a polydimethylsiloxane, or dimethicone, backbone) carrying lauryl and polyglyceryl side groups. That structure makes it partly oil-loving and partly water-compatible, so it behaves as a non-ionic emulsifier that can hold water droplets stable inside a silicone or oil phase. In sunscreens it is especially valued for dispersing powders such as the mineral UV filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and for keeping color pigments evenly suspended, which supports smooth, uniform application. Cosmetic ingredient databases classify it as a surfactant with skin- and hair-conditioning functions.
Origin & sourcing
It is a synthetic silicone derivative. A polydimethylsiloxane (dimethicone) chain is chemically modified with lauryl (a 12-carbon alkyl group) and polyglyceryl substituents to create an amphiphilic emulsifier; the base silicone polymer is itself manufactured from silicon-based siloxane chemistry.
