What it is
Mica is the common name for a group of phyllosilicate (sheet silicate) minerals whose defining feature is perfect basal cleavage, meaning individual crystals split easily into thin, flexible, translucent plates. These plates reflect and refract light, giving mica a pearly or glassy luster. In cosmetics this optical quality is used to add shimmer, sheen, slip, and soft-focus or tone-up effects to products such as foundations, tinted sunscreens, and color makeup, and it can also help provide opacity. Mica is frequently used as the base for pearlescent pigments when coated with metal oxides such as titanium dioxide.
