Safety & warnings

History

Nopalea cochenillifera has a long history of use as food and traditional medicine in Mesoamerica. The species epithet references the cochineal insect (Dactylopius coccus), which feeds on this cactus and was harvested for centuries to produce vivid red dye used by pre-Columbian civilizations. The plant was first formally published by Philip Miller in Gardeners Dictionary (8th ed., 1768).
