Ethylhexyl Salicylate

Octisalate is an oil-soluble salicylate ester used in sunscreens as an organic UVB filter that also helps stabilize and dissolve other UV filters.

What it is

Octisalate is the 2-ethylhexyl ester of salicylic acid, a colorless oily liquid with a faint floral odor used as an organic UVB filter in sunscreens. The salicylate portion of the molecule absorbs ultraviolet light, while the branched ethylhexanol portion is a fatty alcohol that contributes emollient character and oil solubility. Because it is a good solvent for other filters, octisalate is frequently formulated to improve the affinity and reduce the photodegradation of less stable filters such as avobenzone and oxybenzone.

Octisalate is a synthetic compound produced by the condensation (esterification) of salicylic acid with 2-ethylhexanol. It is not obtained from natural sources in the form used in cosmetics; the salicylate backbone shares chemistry with naturally occurring salicylates, but the cosmetic ingredient is manufactured.

History

Salicylate esters are among the older organic sunscreen agents, valued historically for their low irritation and good general safety. A 2007 cosmetic ingredient assessment reported that octyl salicylate and other salicylates had a good safety profile, and the material has long been used as a UVB absorber and as a stabilizing co-solvent for other filters.
