Polyglyceryl-3 Ricinoleate

Polyglyceryl-3 Ricinoleate is a polyglycerol ester of ricinoleic acid used in cosmetics as a nonionic emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent.

What it is

This ingredient is formed by esterifying triglycerin (polyglyceryl-3) with ricinoleic acid, the principal fatty acid of castor oil. The resulting nonionic emulsifier is useful for stabilizing emulsions and dispersing pigments, which makes it well suited to cushion sunscreens and tinted products. It also imparts a conditioning, cushioned feel.

Safety & warnings

Polyglyceryl esters of this type are nonionic and typically mild and well tolerated. Because the fatty-acid portion derives from castor oil, those with a known castor-derivative sensitivity may wish to take note, though such reactions are uncommon.
