Polyglyceryl-4 Pentaoleate

Polyglyceryl-4 pentaoleate is a polyglycerol ester of oleic acid used in cosmetics and sunscreens as a non-ionic, water-in-oil emulsifier and emollient.

What it is

Polyglyceryl-4 pentaoleate is formed by esterifying polyglycerin-4 with multiple units of oleic acid, giving a lipophilic, oil-loving emulsifier. Its low hydrophilic-lipophilic balance makes it well suited to stabilizing water-in-oil systems, including the oil-based vehicles often used in sun care. It also imparts a smooth, conditioned feel to the skin.

Safety & warnings

Polyglyceryl oleate esters are generally well tolerated in cosmetic use. Because the ester is based on oleic acid, very high levels in heavy formulas may feel rich on oil-prone skin, though the polyglyceryl ester itself is far less occlusive than free oleic acid.
