Potassium Soap

Potassium Soap is an anionic surfactant and cleansing agent formed by saponifying vegetable or animal fats with potassium hydroxide (KOH). It produces a soft or liquid soap used in cosmetics for cleansing, foaming, and emulsification.

What it is

Potassium Soap is produced through saponification, in which triglycerides from vegetable or animal oils react with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to yield glycerol and potassium salts of fatty acids. Unlike sodium soaps (which are hard bars), potassium soaps are characteristically soft to liquid in consistency due to the larger potassium ion. As anionic surfactants, they lower surface tension, solubilize oils and dirt, and rinse cleanly with water. In cosmetics, Potassium Soap appears in liquid body washes, shampoos, shaving preparations, and cleansing creams. It offers good foaming, biodegradability, and compatibility with many co-surfactants. Formulations based on plant-derived fatty acids (coconut, olive, sunflower) are marketed as natural or sustainable alternatives to synthetic surfactants. The cleansing action is effective at typical skin-contact concentrations without compromising the skin's lipid barrier.

Safety & warnings

Generally well tolerated at use concentrations in rinse-off products. High concentrations or prolonged exposure may cause skin or eye irritation due to alkalinity. Individuals sensitive to the source oil's fatty acids may experience reactions. Not classified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) by ECHA. Like other anionic surfactants, it may be drying if used in undiluted or leave-on applications at high levels.

Origin & sourcing

Made by saponification: vegetable oils (e.g., coconut, olive, sunflower, tall oil) or animal fats are reacted with an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution. The reaction hydrolyzes the ester bonds in triglycerides, releasing glycerol and forming potassium carboxylate salts. The fatty acid chain length and degree of unsaturation of the source oil determine the soap's fluidity, lather quality, and skin feel.

History

Soap-making using potash derived from wood ash dates to antiquity. Potassium-rich plant ash was historically used in northern Europe to produce soft soaps for textile scouring and personal cleansing. Commercial liquid potassium soap emerged in the 19th century. Medicated green soap (sapo viridis), a USP-listed potassium soap of vegetable oils, was widely used therapeutically through the 20th century.
