What it is
This ingredient is built on phytosterol, a plant-derived sterol, that has been alkoxylated with about 7 propylene-glycol and 30 ethylene-oxide units to add water-loving character. The resulting amphiphilic molecule can emulsify oils and water while the sterol portion lends a conditioning, skin-compatible feel. In sunscreens it helps stabilize the emulsion and contributes to a soft sensory finish.
Safety & warnings
Phytosterol-based emulsifiers are generally considered mild and well tolerated. As an ethoxylated material it can carry trace 1,4-dioxane, controlled during purification. It is not a recognized fragrance allergen.
