What it is
PVM/MA Copolymer is a synthetic polymer made from methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride. In sunscreens and other cosmetics it forms a thin, cohesive film on the skin that helps hold the formulation in place and can improve the even distribution and longevity of the product, and it also contributes to thickening and binding. It is widely used in color cosmetics, hair products, and sun care as a functional structuring agent.
Safety & warnings
Considered well tolerated and low-irritation in cosmetic use as a polymer that largely remains on the skin surface. It is not a known fragrance allergen and is not associated with comedogenicity.
Origin & sourcing
Synthetic; produced by polymerization of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride monomers.
