What it is
This oil is produced by steam distillation of the wood of Santalum austrocaledonicum, a sandalwood species native to New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Like other sandalwood oils it is rich in santalol isomers and contributes a soft, woody, lasting odor. It is used at low levels in fragranced skincare and sun care for scent rather than for any protective function.
Safety & warnings
As a santalol-rich essential oil it can act as a fragrance allergen in sensitive individuals, similar to other sandalwood oils. Fragrance-sensitive or eczema-prone users may benefit from patch testing, and it is generally used in low concentrations.
