What it is
Sorbitan Cocoate is the monoester of coconut acid (coco fatty acids) and hexitol anhydrides derived from sorbitol. The coconut acid component contains a mixture of fatty acids including caprylate, caprate, laurate, myristate, palmitate, stearate, and oleate. As a non-ionic surfactant, it carries no electrical charge and is compatible with most cosmetic actives, preservatives, and electrolytes. It functions primarily to bridge oil and water phases, favoring water-in-oil emulsion systems (low HLB character). In formulations, it helps produce smooth, stable creams, lotions, and cleansing products by preventing separation of the oil and water components. It is found in skin care moisturizers, facial makeup, eye products, and cleansing preparations.

History
Sorbitan esters (known commercially as Spans) were developed in the mid-20th century as non-ionic emulsifiers. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel first assessed several sorbitan esters in 1985, then issued additional safety reports including a 2002 addendum covering Sorbitan Cocoate specifically, and a further updated safety assessment published in 2014-2015. The Panel consistently concluded these ingredients are safe as used in cosmetics.
