What it is

In cosmetics it is a mineral powder used as a bulking and opacifying agent and, most distinctively, as a base or coating component in effect pigments, where it is combined with mica and titanium dioxide to create pearlescent, multi-tone, and luminous finishes. Because it shifts how light is reflected, it appears in highlighters, brightening and luminizing products, and in mineral makeup and powder sunscreens. Origin & sourcing
Tin oxide occurs naturally as the mineral cassiterite, which is the main ore of tin. The cosmetic-grade material is typically produced synthetically; synthetic tin(IV) oxide is made by burning tin metal in air, and industrial tin is recovered by reducing the oxide with carbon in a furnace at roughly 1200 to 1300 degrees Celsius. The purified powder is a colorless to yellowish or light-grey solid.
History
Tin oxide has a long history of human use well beyond cosmetics. It has been used as a mordant in dyeing since ancient Egypt and has traditionally served as a polishing powder and as an opacifier and white colorant in ceramic glazes.
