What it is
Trimethoxysilyl dimethicone is a polydimethylsiloxane backbone carrying trimethoxysilyl reactive groups, which can hydrolyze and condense to form a durable, cross-linked silicone film. In sunscreens and color cosmetics it is often used to surface-treat mineral pigments and UV filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, improving their dispersion and helping the product spread evenly. The resulting film also imparts a soft, smooth skin feel and helps the formula adhere to the skin.
Safety & warnings
Silicone film formers of this type are generally well tolerated and are not common skin sensitizers. As an alkoxysilane-functional polymer it may release small amounts of methanol during hydrolysis in manufacturing, but the finished, cured polymer used in formulas is inert. It is non-fragrance and not associated with significant comedogenicity at typical use levels.
