Wasabia Japonica Seed Extract is derived from the seeds of Wasabia japonica (also classified as Eutrema japonicum), the wasabi plant native to Japan, the Russian Far East, and the Korean Peninsula. Like other parts of this Brassicaceae-family plant, the seeds contain glucosinolates that enzymatically convert to isothiocyanates when cells are disrupted. These isothiocyanates act as super antioxidants by inducing the skin's own phase II detoxification enzymes, providing extended protective effects that outlast conventional antioxidants. The extract also exhibits antimicrobial activity against common pathogens. In cosmetic formulations it is used at low concentrations for antioxidant protection, skin conditioning, and as a preservation-booster in anti-aging, anti-acne, and after-sun products.

Safety & warnings

Wasabi isothiocyanates can be irritating at high concentrations, particularly to mucous membranes and sensitive skin, due to the pungent sulfur compounds. Individuals with known sensitivity to Brassicaceae-family plants (horseradish, mustard, radish) should patch-test products containing this extract.
