Teaching Sun Safety as a Lifelong Habit
The mindset shift that protects kids for decades.
Up to 80% of a person's lifetime sun exposure was once thought to occur in childhood (now known to be less, but childhood exposure still matters).
One blistering sunburn in childhood can more than double lifetime melanoma risk.
Questions we get a lot
What SPF is safe for babies and kids?
For children 6 months and older, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher; mineral (zinc/titanium) formulas are often preferred for young skin. Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun and protected with clothing and shade rather than sunscreen.
When can babies start wearing sunscreen?
Sunscreen is generally recommended from 6 months of age. For younger infants, the AAP advises shade, hats and protective clothing, applying a small amount of sunscreen only to exposed areas such as the face and backs of the hands when shade isn't available.
Are kids' sunscreens different from adult ones?
Often only in marketing. 'Kids' sunscreens usually use the same filters as adult versions but lean toward gentle, fragrance-free, mineral, water-resistant formulas. What matters is broad-spectrum SPF 30+, applied generously and reapplied — not the label.
