Does water reflect UV onto my skin?
Yes. Open water reflects roughly 10-30% of UV rays back up at you, so on or near water you're exposed from above and from the surface. That reflected UV is a big reason swimmers and boaters burn quickly, and it reaches spots like the underside of the chin and arms.
How much UV does sand reflect?
Dry sand reflects about 15% of UV, adding to the sunlight hitting your skin directly. Combined with long hours and few clothes, that's why a beach day delivers far more UV than the same time spent on grass, which reflects very little.
Can I burn while sitting in the shade?
Yes. Shade blocks direct overhead sun but not the UV reflected up off water, sand and concrete, so a beach umbrella alone isn't full protection. Pair shade with broad-spectrum SPF 30+, reapplied every two hours, and apply it to easy-to-miss undersides like the chin and nose.
